Target's Weekend of Checkout System Outages

This weekend Target stores around the country were thrown into disarray when system outages prevented customers from making purchases. Many stores’ cash registers were offline for about 2 hours because of the glitch. However, most stores were able to accept cash during the outage, but there were long lines.
A company spokesperson said the outage was the result of a “an internal technology issue” and was not security related. “After an initial but thorough review, we can confirm that this was not a data breach or security-related issue, and no guest information was compromised at any time,” the spokesperson said.
Customers took to social media to vent about their difficult weekend shopping trips to Target. While there were many complaints, there some compliments too for the hard working Target employees who kept their cool and even entertained bored kids stuck in long lines with their parents during the outage.
On Sunday, Target suffered a second outage that was unrelated to the first. Apparently Target uses a separate vendor to accept payments, and on Sunday the vendor experienced an issue at one of its data centers which prevented Target from processing certain card payments for about 1.5 hours. The number of stores unaffected on Sunday was unclear. Target was working to make sure the issues does not happen again.
