Well, according to Bryan Merryman, Chief Operating Officer at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, “the self-serve frozen yogurt market is [currently]extremely fragmented, and …successful consolidators will dominate the industry within a few years.” With no hesitation, consolidation is exactly what Rocky Mountain and their majority-owned U-Swirl Frozen Yogurt Inc. aimed for. As of this year, U-Swirl now owns the assets for CherryBerry Enterprises, LLC and Yogli Mogli, LLC, both of whom franchise/operate close to 182 frozen yogurt cafes located in 27 states and three foreign countries.
With this deal and acquiring two additional operators of frozen yogurt, U-Swirl now maintains a total of 267 self-serve frozen yogurt cafes, placing the company as a “major player” in the constantly changing world of frozen yogurt. The two companies were acquired for approximately $4.25 million as well as $4 million in U-Swirl shares. Currently, U-Swirl shares are at $0.50, which makes the deal about $6 million or $38k per store.
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is based in Durango, Colorado. As an international franchisor and confectionery manufacturer in the United States, Canada, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, the company produces a line of premium chocolates as well as fudge, caramels, caramel apples, and truffles. Frank Crail, who is currently Chief Executive Officer, founded the company in 1981.
