Eat. Mor. Chikin. That’s what Chik-Fil-A has been telling Americans…and eat more chicken they did. Chik-Fil-A has now surpassed KFC in total U.S. sales, grossing $5 billion last year. This number, close to $800 million over KFC’s $4.22 billion, places them at the top of the U.S. fast-food chicken service.
Ironically, Chik
-Fil-A was able t o accomplish this goal with a fraction of the restaurants. Currently, there are about 1700 Chik-Fil-A stores, while there are close to 4,490 KFC stores. Taking into consideration average sales per store, KFC has remained near constant over the past few years, grossing a little over $900 thousand each year. However, its competitor continues to climb steadily in sales, with each Chik-Fil-A restaurant making over $3 million this past year. It is important to note that these numbers all include absolutely no money coming in on Sundays for Chik-Fil-A, the one day a week it is closed indefinitely.
The largest number of Chik-Fil-A restaurants are currently found in the South, with 270 in Texas, 200 in Georgia, and 161 in Florida. However, the company is now focusing their growth plans in northern, Midwest, and western states, with plans to open 100 new locations this upcoming year.
