Pete a recent high school graduate, 17 year old Fred DeLuca, and family friend Dr. Peter Buck team up to open their first submarine sandwich shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965. Originally called “Pete’s Super Submarines,” they sold 312 sandwiches the first day. The average cost of a sub was between 49 cents and 69 cents. In 1968 they opened another location with the name of Pete’s Subway. DeLuca and Buck decide that franchising is the best way to kick-start the chain’s growth. The first franchise that opened was in Wailingford, Connecticut. By 1982 Subway had over 300 locations in the United States. 1984 was the year they opened their first Subway overseas in the Middle East. Subway has expanded tremendously. The reason for such success id because they offer a variety of sandwiches for everyone to enjoy. They often have promotions like the $5 dollar foot-longs and $6 dollar foot-longs. Currently they have 16 different sandwiches not including the breakfast sandwiches and a variety of salads and cookies to enjoy.
