Online Ordering for Restaurant Success

Keeping Up with the Consumer

Big changes are happening in the restaurant industry. Online ordering and delivery are becoming the biggest change since the drive through.

Unsurprisingly, the change is being driven by tech-savvy millennials who live in an on-demand world.

Cowen & Co. estimated last year that U.S. restaurant delivery alone could become a $35 billion market by 2025, and all the big names in fast food are aware of it.

Wendy’s, Jack in the Box, Dunkin’ Donuts, Taco Bell and KFC have recently partnered with Door Dash while Domino’s, Papa John’s and Starbucks have been providing the service for some time.

Back to School

Restaurants offering delivery have a lot to learn.

First come logistics. Restaurants will have more cars to handle as UberEats drivers show up.

“Just by looking at the number of deliveries that we bring to a restaurant, we found that it would actually overload the drive-thru to have Dashers lining up through their cars,” said Eitan Bencuya of Door Dash.

Restaurants offering online ordering for pick up will have to handle more customers in store.

Starbucks has said the customer flow at some locations slowed as customers who ordered ahead on its popular mobile order and pay app crowded into restaurants.

Keepin’ it Fresh

Then the questions of food quality comes in, as some foods hold up better than others. Everyone knows pizza was born for delivery, and ideally continues to cook en route.

Chinese food, tacos, soups, sandwiches, pasta and salads also hold up fine. French fries, however, are a delicate situation.

McDonald’s french fries take three minutes to cook and have a seven-minute holding time. Delivery can take over 20 minutes at times so delivering food in good condition will take some innovation.
