Online Food Delivery Service Uber Eats Now Accepts Apple Pay

On April 17, Uber, the ride sharing company announced that it was adding an Apple Pay option to Uber Eats, its popular online food ordering and delivery platform. Customers who want to use the payment option can now do so either using the Face ID or Touch ID option inside the Uber Eats app. Apple Pay is already a payment option for the Uber ride-hailing app, but until now wasn’t available for Uber Eats. Apple Pay will be rolling out to Uber Eats customers in nearly twenty countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan.
In 2018 Uber introduced Venmo, the mobile payment service owned by PayPal as a payment option, after noticing that six million payments in the popular app were marked “Uber” in the previous year. Uber realized that Venmo was a desirable payment option among friends who wanted to share the cost of a meal or a ride. Uber Eats also accepts credit and debit cards, as well as PayPal.
While Apple Pay is a competitor to both PayPal and Venmo, many brands partner with the service because having a built-in payment choice leads to higher conversion rates. Apple Pay already functions in other online food delivery apps including competitors Postmates and Grubhub.
When making the announcement, Uber emphasized Apple Pay’s security and privacy features. They stressed that actual credit card numbers aren’t stored on the device or in Uber’s servers. A unique device account number is assigned and encrypted, which then gets stored in the secure element on the customer’s device. Each transaction is then authorized with a unique code that is only used once. Uber continues to improve on providing customers with secure, convenient options to utilize its services.
