Dubai announced the installation of "smart cameras"

Los Angeles – August 26, 2012 – The government of Dubai announced the planned installation of smart security cameras all over the emirate within days. Director of the Criminal Investigation Division, Brigadier Khalil Al Mansouri, sated that the security cameras will be used for surveillance of daily traffic and criminal activity. According to him, the smart nature of the camera systems will only necessitate the installation of a small number of cameras. Speaking to the Arabic Alittihad, Al Mansouri said, “cameras will be installed in several areas in the next few days…they are not many but have advanced features.”
Addressing concerns of privacy,  Al Mansouri stated that the cameras will be placed only in public areas for monitoring purposes. Dubai Police Chief, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, indicated a Dh500 million budget for the security camera project. The cameras will add to the existing 25,000 security camera system spread across Dubai and plans of further extending surveillance are in place as Al Mansouri stated, “We have a plan to extend the use of these cameras to all places and areas in a way that will not violate people’s privacy.” Security cameras currently dot the streets of the city of more than two million.
The paper said the new cameras are part of a Dh500-million plan approved by Dubai’s authorities to deploy high-tech security cameras through the Gulf’s business and tourism hub to control crime and road traffic.
