After much anticipation, District Doughnut served their first customers today in Washington, D.C. Although the store had many soft-openings during the month of August to give customers a taste of their unique doughnuts, today was the store’s official opening, and it plans to stay open from today onward.
Is it time to tell gourmet cupcakes to move over? Has a new gourmet dessert taken over? Owners Greg Menna and Juan Pablo Segura, along with pastry chef Christine Shaefer, sure hope so! According to their website, the three “strive to infuse [their] pastries with the city’s classic history and vibrant creative spirit.” With gourmet flavors such as lemon meringue, caramel apple streusel, cannoli, and chai tea crème brulee just to name a few, District Doughnut aims to take popular dessert options and recreate them as a delicious doughnut.
Inside the store, you will be greeted by cool blue and teal colors, along with white all around, giving the store a fun feeling. Customers can even watch the doughnut-making process. The doughnutery will also be serving drip coffee courtesy of Compass Coffee.
The doughnut shopped received a bright response from the public as well as the press through their soft-openings in August, with some saying the doughnuts served were the best dessert they had ever tasted. As of today, District Doughnuts will be serving about 8-10 different flavored doughnuts per day, including a gluten-free option as well.
