Carl's Jr. Maintains Relevance in Health-Craze

Long before Point of Sale was around for business owners to utilize, cash registers were dominating the counters of all fast food and full service restaurants. Looking at one of the most famous international fast-food restaurants, Carl’s Jr. and its history highlight the continuous progression of a business. Alongside the eventual need to switch from the cash register to a Point of Sale system, one of their greatest assets was using innovative methods to keep menu options carlsjrlogo1varied and diverse.
Carl Karcher and his wife began their dream by purchasing a hot dog cart in Los Angeles in 1941. Just 4 years later, they expanded to Carl’s Drive-in Barbeque, adding the now famous hamburgers to their menu. Finally, in 1950, they opened the first of their Carl’s “junior” locations, named so because they were smaller than the original drive-in.
In 1974, the restaurant proved itself as an innovator in the fast-food world by being the first provider of a full salad bar. Not only did this add to their menu, but it allowed them to stay relevant as customers became more health conscious. This change set Carl’s Jr. apart from all competition (McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Burger King, etc). These companies soon hopped on the healthy-bandwagon as well, bringing packaged salads to each of their menus.
Now, 64 years after the first junior location opened, Carl’s Jr. restaurants operate in 19 different countries (see list of countries below*), with over 1200 locations. Today more than ever, society strives to stay healthy, which creates a challenge for fast-food restaurants to follow this trend. Carl’s Jr. shows that it is possible to serve gourmet burgers while also having healthy options such as their full salad bar as well as their premium packaged salads.Carls-Jr-Grilled-Chicken-Salads
