Giant Retailer Walmart Tests Artificial Intelligence Monitoring to Improve Efficiency

Walmart is pushing forward into the future. Recently, Walmart began testing an artificial intelligence monitoring system at one of it’s busiest Neighborhood Markets in Levittown, New York. The store is packed with video cameras, digital screens, sensors and over 100 servers. The groundbreaking system will immediately detect out detect out-of-stock items, signaling to an employee that the product needed to be restocked. Also the system will gather information such as when more registers need to be opened and when shopping carts needed to be collected.
This new artificial intelligence system is in addition to the self-piloting AI robot Walmart debuted at some of its stores in 2018. The self-piloting AI robot roams up and down the aisles, scanning row after row of shelves, to detect out-of-stock items, identify incorrect prices, and locate shelves with missing labels. Walmart also uses a self driving cleaning robot which scrubs floors and pickup towers which allow customers to order online and pick up their orders at the store. The purpose of all of Walmart’s AI systems is to free up store employees for customer service duties.
Walmart’s main competitor, e-commerce leader giant Amazon has also been testing AI-integrated grocery stores. Amazon debuted its first store in 2018 and is currently up to 11 lacations. The Amazon grocery store is equipped with cameras and sensors that use computer vision, data fusion, and deep learning to digitally detect and track what items a customer has selected from the shelves. Once a customer is done shopping, they simply leave the store–no check out necessary and their Amazon account is automatically charged for the items purchased. Both companies realize that not only are today’s customers comfortable with technology driven solutions, but that technology strongly increases vendor efficiency.
