First stop: LAX…and Starbucks Coffee

starbucksLAX
After arriving to the airport, the first stop on the way to my terminal is definitely the line at Starbucks. And at 6:30am, you can bet that line was long. It’s a little funny. I mean at this point, are we really doing it for the caffeine? It’s quite debatable how greatly a Pumpkin Spice Latte is going to benefit my lethargy. Regardless, despite my attempt to be frugal, Starbucks wins again, and I leave the register with not only a fun-flavored latte but a banana nut muffin to go with it.
According to national statistics, coffee is a $30 billion industry in the United States. Did I mention there were two Starbucks locations within a few hundred feet of each other in the airport? This fact alone is enough to show how we are consumed by coffee shops every day, everywhere. Accounting Principals completed a survey reporting that more than half of working Americans buy coffee while at work, and consumers spend close to $1000 a year to get their java fix.
Not only are popular coffee shops (Starbucks, Peet’s Coffee, Coffee Bean, Tim Horton’s, etc) serving up one of America’s favorite drinks, but many other restaurants and fast-food joints are hopping on the coffee bandwagon. Taco Bell recently joined the breakfast industry, and McDonald’s McCafe has upped their coffee game too. Not only do they serve various flavors of iced coffees, but they’ve also now added WiFi to their McCafe locations to get that coffee shop, “stay here” feel.
It’s safe to say that buying a cup of coffee isn’t just for the coffee anymore; it’s the experience, the aromas, the environment, and possibly even the ironic joy of waiting in line at Starbucks, even at 6 in the morning. So as I sit here drinking my latte waiting to board my plane, I can be certain the coffee craze is here to stay.
