Omni Channel Ordering Chinese Coffee Brand Luckin to File US IPO

Chinese coffee company Luckin recently filed for a US initial public offering. While main rival US coffee giant Starbucks has dominated the market in China since it first opened there in 1999, new kid on the block Luckin has experienced rapid growth. The upstart coffee company has expanded from zero to more than 2,300 stores in less than two years.
Developed by the same team that created Chinese ride-hailing platform UCAR, the Luckin has an “enterprising” data-enterprising start-up mindset. Central to Luckin’s sales strategy is using an omni channel approach which offers specialized pickup stores preparing orders taken from its mobile app. This way busy customers don’t have to wait in long lines. They can simply pick up their order and go. Also important to driving sales have been mobile app promos and discounts.
Starbucks currently sees unlimited potential for growth in China. In fact they plan to open about 1,000 stores through 2021. However, they may have big battle on their hands.  While Luckin currently only operates in China, sources say they took the unusual step of filing to go public in the U.S. because the company wants investors to have a direct valuation comparison with Starbucks. Luckin aims to raise up to $800 million through it’s IPO and will use the money to fuel its rapid expansion.
