Albertsons & Supervalu Credit Card Data Targeted by Hackers Again

supervalu_NEW_1Shoppers at Albertsons and Supervalu may be at victims of yet another hacking. The supermarket chains reported that malicious software was installed on the company’s credit card and debit cards processing networks at their stores.
The information taken from Albertsons’ customers spans over a dozen states, and includes cardholder names, account numbers, and credit card expiration. Supervalu stated that although the malware was installed on a system that goes across several chains, they believe only a few checkout lanes in specific Cub Foods stores in Minnesota were breached.
In addition, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food and Pharmacy stores as well as a number of stand-alone liquor stores were also affected y the malware. Supervalu claims that the malware at these stores was not able to steal customer information, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Albertsons which is based in Boise (Idaho) and includes 1,081 Acme Markets, Jewel-Osco, and Shaw’s and Star Markets stated that stores across the nations may be effected including Albertsons stores in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming; Acme Markets stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa; and Shaw’s and Star Markets stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont could all be effected by the malware.
This is the second data breach for Supervalu stores, with the first taking place earlier this year between June 22nd and July 17th. The first hack was discovered in August, and had affected close to 200 stores. Supervalu stated that the two incidents are separate.
Previously Supevalu provided a list of stores affected listed here: http://www.supervalue.com/content/dam/supervalu/Store%20List.pdf
Over the past year, retail giants including Target, Michaels, and Home Depot have all reported a hack in their systems. Investigations are ongoing.
